Introducing the 80Retros x HMX Film Switches and GAME1989 keycaps
80Retros, a brand known for their love of yesteryear, is not satisfied with simple retro aesthetics. In their quest for more interesting products, they have launched the Film Switches and the GAME1989 keycaps.
The film series of switches take inspiration from film photography, and come in canisters reminiscent of film rolls. These canisters are stackable, making storage a breeze without compromising on style.
However, the package is not the only selling point – the switches are finetuned versions of HMX switches, using different materials, with different travel distances, providing different sounds and typing experiences, each building on the solid base HMX is known for.
We have three kinds of switches – the KD200, based on the classic Kodak 200 film, the FJ400, with it’s inspiration being the Fuji 400 film, and the GAME1989 has the same colours as the GSA 1989 keycap set, both inspired by the colours of the Gameboy.
The KD200 switch has 3.5mm travel, with a LY stem, PA12 top and P2 bottom housing. This provides the sound HMX has become known for, only a bit deeper in sound.
The FJ400 has 3.8mm travel with a T2 stem, PC top, and T2 bottom. The PC top has specifically been chosen to give it a deeper sound than the KD200.
The GAME 1989 has the full 4mm of travel, with a T5 stem, PC top housing and P4 bottom housing. Providing a full deep sound signature, with the feeling of a classic MX switch.
Paired with these switches are the GAME1989 keycaps, in ever popular Cherry, and the GSA profiles. The GSA profile provides a tall profile with a deep spherical sculpt. It comes polished from the factory, perfectly nailing that retro aesthetic. Both sets come with expansive kitting, ensuring compatibility with a number of layouts such as 100%, 75%, 65%, as well as Alice and Ergo layouts. Check them out below.
